Certification: IACIS Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CFCE)
The International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists have begun a certification program. This certification is the IACIS Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CFCE). This program is designed for those who have a core knowledge of computer systems and forensics concepts and methods. There are 2 paths to certification with IACIS.
In order to become CFCE certified, there are 2 paths you can take:
- Internal: This would be a 2 week training course which covers the basic knowledge needed for the exam. This does include the cost of the exam. ($1995)
- External: You will have to demonstrate a commensurate level of training and computer forensics experience and submit an application to sit the test. ($750)
There are 2 stages to the testing program.
Stage 1 - Peer Review – You are assigned to a coach who mentors you through a series of 4 practical exercises. You must complete the assignment successfully to continue on.
Stage 2 - Certification Phase – This is an independent exercise, not led by a coach or mentor. The candidate is provided with a forensic image and a written final exam that has 100 questions dealing with a variety of fundamentals.
If the candidate scores at least an average of 80% on the examinations, then they will receive certification.
Cost for Exam: $750 (external training); $1995 (internal training)
Time To Complete: Approximately 10-90 days
Expiration: 3 years
